At East & West Animal Hospital we offer both Western and Holistic veterinary medicine.
The difference between holistic and Western practices is found in the philosophy, diagnostic techniques and modes of treatment. In integrative medicine we integrate holistic and Western practices where needed.
Holistic medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole patient -body, spirit and emotions- with the goal of optimal health and wellness. A holistic doctor uses all forms of healthcare, from general methods and medications to alternative therapies and medications to treat the patient.
Western medicine is most common in the US and Europe and involves the use of drugs, surgery and radiation as primary treatment, focusing on the elimination of physical symptoms.
Both the Holistic and Western approaches may be appropriate on a case-by-case basis. Our goal and our definition of integrative medicine is to use both advanced scientific and holistic medicine, either on its own or integrated, to most effectively benefit the patient's health.
A comprehensive comparison of Holistic and Conventional medicine can be found on the American Holistic Health Association website.
